Best in Show 2008

The Fall
Ivan Twohig, National College of Art & Design

This project deals with concepts of mapping, translation and abstraction. Ivan is interested in architecture and the way in which current digital technologies are influencing how we create and conceive built environments. Theorists such as Marshal McLuhan and Jean Baudrillard predict that our built environments will become increasingly like the virtual environments in which they are created, which in turn will profoundly affect our perception of the world around us. Ivan utilises the same methods and uses the same computer programmes that architects and designers use, but in ways that critique those processes.

The Black Plum
Kevin Gaffney Dublin Institute of Technology, Mountjoy Square

The Black Plum revolves around the splintering of the main character, Felix, into two other personas, Verity and Roger. Felix, in an episode of distress, attempts to identify, reject and understand 'the other', and fighting his own identity leads him to choose to resist or submit to societal oppression. The piece explores the underworld the characters inhabit for the duration of their power struggle.

70 Still Frames and 5 Minutes 50 Seconds of Video
Sam Holden London College of Communications

Using a digital SLR; image capture software, and a hidden video camera, 70 Still Frames and 5 Minutes 50 Seconds of Video highlights how much we simply do not see when encountering someone’s photographic reproduction. The piece also underlines how problematic photography can be as a representative medium.

Verso-Tempo
Julien Lonchamp Trinity College Dublin

In the early days of cinema, going to a movie was like going to a show. As cinema was silent, often a pianist or a small ensemble would perform during the projection. With its soundtrack scored for eight musicians, Julien Lonchamp's short film Verso-Tempo proposes to recapture the excitement of silent cinema performance. This piece was performed live at the launch of the ‘Best in Show’ exhibition on 20th of November in The Digital Hub.

A Failed Attempt At Escape
Ruaidhri Lennon Limerick School of Art & Design

During the last year, Ruaidhri Lennon has continuously worked on the construction of a personal space which dually acts as a studio and a hide-out. The idea of the need for such a space originated from the lack of privacy in everyday life. A lot of the artist’s time was spent working in an off-licence in Limerick City and most of his pieces deal with and document the things to which he was inevitably exposed, such as violence, crime, isolation and extreme repetitiveness.

Are Those My Footsteps?
Jessica Timlin Limerick School of Art & Design

Jessica’s piece, Are Those My Footsteps?, investigates how she can create her own realities, primarily influenced by cinematography in film. She explores why and how something is familiar to us and how affected by the media we are.

Aftermath08
Sinead Mc Carthy, Sinead Rafferty, Irene McGinn, Ronan Lynch and Cormac Meegan Dundalk Institute of Technology

Aftermath08 is part of a new and emergent multimedia genre known as Alternative Reality Gaming. The game is structured around an interactive narrative that uses multiple media and game elements to engage players, encourage collaboration and tell a story.

Under the Weather
Mary Reynolds Dublin Institute of Technology, Mountjoy Square

This piece was created as an advertisement to increase awareness of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The Centre for Environmental Therapeutics (CET) offers solutions for those who are affected by SAD. The advert is aimed at the general public in Ireland, one in five of whom is affected by SAD, though most are unaware of the condition.
