Katrine Westum, Third Year Interior Architecture student at Griffith College, Dublin.
Project Title:
‘Greenlife – Office for Sustainable Design’.

Summary:
Katrine, who is originally from Norway, focused on the interior design aspects of the renovation of an old building in Oslo into new office space for the Office for Sustainable Design. The concept for her project was ‘green invasion’: her designs were planned so that sustainable and environmentally-friendly design elements would ‘take over’ or have precedence in the renovated building.

With Katrine’s design, visitors to the building could get the feeling that nature was coming into the indoor space. Her project, for example, suggested the use of grass on some areas of the floor; indoor trees that would grow up through floor slabs; climbing plants running up to the ceilings, and recycled and ‘green’ materials used throughout the building. Skylights and glazed panels would be used to let natural light flow through the building, which would also have cross-flow ventilation; rain-water collectors (for collecting water to be used in flushing toilets); a green roof; solar panels; windmills, and even an area where workers in the building could exercise and create additional energy for use within the office space. Inspiration for Katrine’s project was mainly drawn from nature.
