In the launching of an artist’s career there are sacrifices made and a parade of obstacles encountered in ones continuous endeavours towards establishment, recognition and success. Although there is no particular prescribed path, the graduate will certainly face an abundance of challenges in the emerging stages of their artistic efforts. While continuously working through these challenges the importance of peer discourse, support and critique is vital in preparing for the professional challenges of the contemporary art world.
The intention of this exhibition was to gather together those that are still practicing from their original peer group in order to showcase a collection of work that although differing in style and medium, is representative of each artist ‘s prevalent practice. In coming together again - four years since graduation – To come so far for beauty offers a chance to view how an individual’s artwork has developed and where the work sits today in contemporary practice. The exhibition also presents a site for dialogue and for reflection on the various paths taken since graduating.
To open up peer discussion, an artist’s talk will accompany and frame the exhibition. This talk aims to acknowledge a number of relevant issues regarding the artist as professional and address the needs and questions the student or graduate artist may have post-college. Some of the artists involved will introduce the audience present to their practice and will discuss and highlight their different individual career paths and choices made since leaving college.
